Stewart and Earnhardt buy Historic Mid South race track
The Memphis Commercial Appeal is reporting that NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr and Tony Stewart will soon announce plans to purchase Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis Ark. RIS which opened it's doors in 1949 is world renown as the longest continuously operating dirt track in the south and one of the longest in the US. RIS has produced two current Sprint Car Hall of Fame members, "Clarence"Hooker" Hood and Sammy Swindell. Along with two time Nationwide Champion and current Sprint Cup driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and a list of sprint car greats.
When asked about their plans for the historic facility Stewart replied that there are several upgrades in the works both for this season and the near future. Including a video score board, upgrades in grandstand and concessions on both sides and new restrooms for the back stretch fans. The crown jewel in their plans is a new Midsouth Motors Sports Hall of Fame planed for construction just North West of the track location.
A formal announce will be made later this week, Including race dates for both the World of Outlaws Sprints and Late Model series. Including a special all star event in conjunction with the Rock and Roll 50 including Rock Concert fund raiser for St Jude with appearances by Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
